One punch was all it took to kill Marsiling coffeeshop dishwasher

A Vietnamese dishwasher was killed on Saturday evening (May 21) after he was punched by a friend during a heated argument at a workers' dormitory near Block 218 Marsiling Cresent.

The fracas started over dinner when Vietnamese national Phan Duc Thang, 33, questioned his friend, Ah Nam, 28, for failing to remit money to his parents.

Recounting how the tragedy unfolded, Ah Nam, a store assistant said: "Three of us were having dinner. When Phan started chiding me for not remitting money to my parents, I naturally got angry and told him to mind his business."

"Unhappy at my retort, he grabbed a chair and flung it at me. Thankfully, he missed," Ah Nam told Chinese evening daily Shin Min Daily News.

The third person at the dinner, Nguyen Trong Phu, 28, swung his fist unexpectedly at Phan's temple in a fit of rage.

"Nguyen felt that Phan's reaction wasn't necessary, hence [Nguyen's] action. After Nguyen punched Phan, Phan collapsed and was motionless. We were all very scared and called the ambulance immediately," Ah Nam added.

Phan died in the ambulance while he was sent to the hospital.

Nguyen was arrested the same day, and was charged in court on Monday (May 23).

It was later revealed that Phan died after sustaining a cerebral haemorrhage.

Two of Phan's brothers flew into Singapore on Wednesday (May 25) upon receiving word of his death.

Phan's elder brother, Ah Long, 40, told Shin Min Daily News that Phan was the sole breadwinner for his family, and he usually remitted 70 per cent of his monthly income back home.

"He was supporting our family of eight in Nghe An, Vietnam, including our 78-year-old mother. Phan earned $1,000, and he usually remitted $700 back, leaving $300 for himself," Ah Long, a farmer, said.

Phan is survived by his wife of 14 years and two sons aged 13 years old and eight months old.

If convicted, Nguyen could face up to seven years in prison, and a fine or caning.

RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilian police on Friday (May 27) were investigating the gang-rape of a 16-year-old girl whose attackers boasted about it by posting an online video of her that has horrified the country.

Online social networks erupted with outrage over the video posted on Wednesday featuring the girl naked on a bed and the apparent rapists bragging that she had been raped by more than 30 men.

They are suspected of assaulting her on May 21 in Rio de Janeiro, a city stricken by violent crime that will host the Olympic Games in August.

"There are strong indications that the young woman was raped," Rio police chief Fernando Veloso told a news conference. "We cannot say whether there were 30 attackers, 33 or 36. The investigations will determine that," he said.

Police have identified four of the men suspected of taking a "direct or indirect" part in the rape or the posting of the video, he added.

Brazil's acting president Michel Temer and other senior figures reacted with outrage.

"I condemn most forcefully the rape of the teenager in Rio de Janeiro," he wrote on Twitter. "It is absurd that in the 21st century we should have to live with barbaric crimes such as this."

The authorities are working "to find those responsible and rigorously punish the authors of this rape and the publishing of this criminal act on social networks," he said.

BRAZIL'S 'CULTURE OF RAPE'

The UN women's rights agency condemned the case along with another recent alleged gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl in the northeastern state of Piaui.

"Apart from the fact that these are young women, these barbaric cases are similar in that the teenagers were lured by their attackers in premeditated plots," UN Women in Brazil spokeswoman Nadine Gasman said on Thursday. "They were violently attacked in a context of illegal drug use."

Brazilian police recorded a sexual assault in the country every 11 minutes in 2014, the Brazilian non-governmental organisation Public Safety Forum said in a study, estimating that half a million such assaults take place overall each year.

"This case is not unusual," said Luise Bello, spokeswoman for women's rights group Think Olga, of the Rio gang-rape. "The culture of rape is very strong in Brazil. It is part of our daily life, although people deny it."

Top officials were meeting to discuss new measures to stop violence against women, Temer said. He took over as interim president earlier this month from suspended leftist leader Dilma Rousseff, who faces an impeachment trial for allegedly fiddling government accounts.

Rousseff, Brazil's first female president, also expressed outrage over the Rio case. "Once more I reiterate my condemnation of violence against women," she wrote on Facebook.

Countless messages of condemnation on social networks have included calls for a street demonstration in Rio on Friday evening.

A woman who was allegedly caught shoplifting at a supermarket was made to remove all the items she had taken from her clothes and pockets one by one.

Stomper Alicia forwarded a video of the incident to Stomp via WhatsApp and said her friend had sent it to her.

It is unclear where and when exactly this took place.

In the video, a female staff member can be seen shouting at the auntie to hand over the items she had taken.

The auntie had hidden the groceries, such as vegetables and several packets of meat, in her pockets and amongst her clothes.

As she removed each item, the employee can be heard repeatedly yelling, "There's more!' and "Here!"

Alicia said, "This ah ma die die want face. Loser wants to be winner."

"The first time David* e-mailed me, I didn't take much notice.

It was late and I was tired after a long day at work.

After being divorced, dating, but still single for the past 10 years, I was used to receiving online messages regularly from strangers.

"A few days later, I re-opened his message.

Unlike the usual e-mails from suitors, David's was different.

For a start, he'd written a lot.

He told me he was 45 - just a few years older than me - and originally from Chicago but lived in Singapore.

He told me his Singaporean wife had passed away from cancer three years previously, but he was remaining in Asia for the sake of their 12-year-old child.

"I was immediately drawn to the fact that he was a 'family man', and as I have kids myself, I could relate to being a single parent.

David was chatty and remarkably open, even telling me his home address.

"He also attached photos. Tall, fair-haired, tanned and masculine, he was attractive - and even more so in the photos that included him with his son.

"Being a veteran of online relationship sites, I'm not the type to get excited so quickly.

I wanted to fall in love again one day, but I certainly wasn't desperate.

A week later, I dropped him a casual line saying it would be nice to be friends.

"David replied after a few hours saying he was flattered that I'd got in touch, and we exchanged numbers.

When he called a few days later to invite me for coffee, his voice was friendly, charming and with a thick American drawl, but the timing wasn't great so we agreed to meet another day.

"The next night he rang and we chatted for 20 minutes about our day, our children and our jobs.

He told me he did contract work in shipping as an oil engineer on rigs in the middle of oceans.

I joked that I didn't have a clue about shipping!
