This is a difficult one. It doesn't make sense to me with any word. Kang is not even a vietnamese word; I am pretty sure of that. In vietnamese language, I don't think you can use the letter "k" in front of the vowel "a", but only "c" can. I could be wrong and I don't have a dictionary near me.

Next time you don't understand then ask the person with "anh khong hieu em muon noi gi het".

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club

Today got a call and 1 sms from my recent gal before she fly back to vn...
This sms comes after the call... a sad sms to read.

Tieng Viet: Dien a lan nay la lan cuoi ok...
English: Call you this time is last time ok...

điện = Electricity
But in this context điện = gọi = call
Why?

lần = time
nay = now
cuối = last
so i presume:
lần nay = this time
lần cuối = last time
Correct?

LIFESTYLE IN BRIEF 23/1
============================

Millions of flowers bloom in HCM City markets

The Lunar New Year atmosphere is literally blooming across HCM City with its myriad streets and flower-markets overflowing with millions of different kinds of flowers as the festival inches ever closer.

The city’s largest flower market, Ho Thi Ky in District 10, has seen a large influx of fresh flowers from Da Lat and some provinces in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta.

The Dam Sen Flower Market in District 11 is handling a flower flow that is three times the normal. The market is teeming with popular flowers like sweet-briar buds, lilies, orchids and roses.

On display along Thanh Thai Street in District 10 are orchid and chrysanthemum pots priced over VND400,000 each. This year has also seen big pots of ornamental dragon fruits emerge as a new Tet decoration.

Youth Cultural House celebrates Tet holiday

The Youth Cultural House in HCM City has a full schedule of traditional events to celebrate Tet. The Tet Viet Ky Suu 2009 (Vietnamese Lunar New Year of the Buffalo 2009) festival opened last Thursday with displays of pictures and calligraphy that are also for sale. It also features lion dancing and a contest between don ca tai tu (traditional southern folk music) groups.

A "calligraphy street" has been set up in front of the house in Pham Ngoc Thach Street, which will remain open until Sunday. It has calligraphers showing off their skills, exhibitions and sales of their art works. A photography exhibition will trace Viet Nam’s development through the years, and a week-long tea festival opening today will showcase different facets of the nation’s tea-drinking culture.

Three days before Tet, visitors will be taught how to make banh tet (round glutinous cake), which will be given later that day to 2,000 orphans along with li xi (lucky money given to children for Tet).

Khanh Hoa resort offers special Tet package

The White Sand Doc Let Resort & Spa in Khanh Hoa Province has launched a special package for the Tet holidays. The three-day tour to the resort, which includes a two-night stay at a superior or Deluxe room in the resort, two lunches and two BBQ dinners, free sea-bath and shuttle bus services between Cam Ranh Airport and Nha Trang Railway Station to the resort, is priced US$155 per guest.

Travel firm slashes package tour prices

To support the "Impressive Viet Nam" promotion campaign launched by the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism, HCM City-based Vietravel has reduced its tour prices. Under a new plan, the company will slash US$180 from its nine-day tour of Australia, standing at $2,999 per guest; a seven-day tour of Malaysia will enjoy a $140/tourist discount, to $459 per visitor. Meanwhile, domestic tours will also enjoy discounts.

Vietravel’s tour of northern provinces will cost VND700,000 less per person; its package tour to Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An will cost VND500,000 less per person; and that to Phu Quoc will fall by VND200,000 per person.

Yes, correct. I impressed. Everybody's viet language is very good. But how well can you converse,verbally, in vietnamese?

Same deal goes when you say in English. Do you say I am sitting "on" the plane or sitting "in" the plane?

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club

In term of conversation, we will be way off cos our mother tongue is not vietnamese... ppl here learnt vietnamese for abt 1-3 years so conversational vietnamese is not as good as small children back in viet but our written one could be as good if not better.

Should be "sitting in the plane", maybe she wants to mean that she is up there in the plane so she used trên.

Can you list out more Lunar New Year (TET) greetings for us? I have listed out a few but the more the merrier... Thanks!

I think "o" refers mostly to "at".....

So your sentence will be saying " I at aeroplane already"

I used to nhan tin my wife or my wife's sister like you... then they told me its not exactly correct grammatically (vietnamese ). Its like we are using the wrong preposition (on, in, at, etc etc)

But i dunno which word to replace at that time...so what i'll do is to construct my sentences around words i know and have about the same meaning...

I.e.

"Anh o san bay roi. Bay gio moi len may bay"

"I at airport already. Now just go up the plane"

Haha so i guess i managed to give the same meaning as "i'm in the plane now"

Well, as long as they are able to understand our meaning then i guess it's fine...but of course in a bid to improve our language ability, we'll have to find out the correct word(s) to use so that we will get better...

Well, you cannot really say we are very good In fact there is a lot of things i dun know yet....haha, i guess we "look good" only because we are a bit better than most people who dun know the language..and the fact that we're not vietnamese makes us look better in your eyes.....

In terms of verbally, i would say pronounciation is a problem...sometimes the tone with which i use for certain words may sound like another word to native Vietnamese. But i guess overall, i can still get my ideas across...

For english, i guess it depends on how you construct your sentence as well....

(my not so good level of english...hope you dun mind...)

Technically speaking, you do not say "I'm sitting on the plane"....because its vague and ambiguious... and in the English language, there is a problem with the "before" and "after" rule here... the word "sitting" is a specific (adjective) action word that requires a preposition and a nuon (place/where) {i.e sitting +(preposition)+ (where)} So "sitting on the plane or sitting in the plane" are very strictly, grammatically incorrect.

You can say (with the word sitting)" I'm sitting on the plane's seat" ; "I'm sitting on the seat of the plane" ; "I'm sitting on the seat beside the aisle" ; "I'm sitting in the last row of seats" ; "I'm sitting in row 12 of the plane".....etc. etc.

or

(without the word sitting) "I'm in the plane now" ; "I'm on the plane now"

hope you get what i mean ....
