1,000 join beach clean-up in Vung Tau
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 02/20/2017 10:36 GMT + 7 About 1,000 people joined a massive beach clean-up in southern Vietnam’s Vung Tau City on Sunday as the city looks to restore its beaches to their original beauty. The 1.2-kilometer length of Bai Sau (Back Beach) and polluted areas of Hon Ba Shrine, Nghinh Phong Park and September 2 Street in the city were also among the locations being cleaned by the team of volunteers. The clean-up team consisted of city youths, civil servants, officials, military men as well as employees of hotels and resorts in the areas, who were mobilized by the People’s Committee of Vung Tau to take part in the drive. By noon, as much as 40 cubic meters of garbage had been collected, reinvigorating previously contaminated areas. Truong Thi Huong, deputy chairwoman of the Vung Tau administration, said the city would be holding regular clean-up activities every month and were looking for cooperation from local authorities and businesses. Huong said the activity would improve the city’s appeal and raise awareness of environmental protection among locals and tourists alike. Last year, the city banned all forms of eating and drinking at its beaches in a move to combat widespread littering. Situated about 100 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau is a popular getaway destination for southerners thanks to its beautiful beaches and fresh seafood, but catering activities had badly polluted its beaches prior to the ban.

Mellowing out in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 02/20/2017 08:45 GMT + 7 Editor’s note: LeiChandra Truong is a Vietnamese American who spent two years living in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. She submitted this story to Tuoi Tre News from the San Francisco Bay Area, where she now lives. On the peaks of the Himalayan Mountains, springtime warmth melts abodes of snow, sending icy water on its 4,500 kilometer journey south, to the Mekong Delta, known as Mien Tay or the southwestern region of Vietnam. The water brings an abundance of growth, so much so that it’s overflowing with locals set to reap its benefits. Sitting on a rickety wooden motorboat, my friend Nancy and I playfully splashed water on each other, mesmerized by the vast expanse of green foliage on this riverway, verdant trees shading the path, and floating lotus lily pads resting on the water’s surface. It was like entering a different world, where life moves slower. It was nice for both of us to escape the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City. My friend was working for a seafood export company and brought me along to the city of Long Xuyen for a few days. Though my visit to the Mekong back in 2011 was short, the place, people and culture still hold a warm place in my heart. After our boat trip, Nancy introduced me to some of her friends. They are a generation older than us and I was shocked that I could address them as anh and chi (brother and sister) even though it’s not socially or culturally correct. They wanted to place importance on the friendship and not the typical hierarchy of seniority inherent in Vietnamese culture. Without a doubt, my new friends were the coolest people ever. continue reading here http://tuoitrenews.vn/city-diary/396...lta-in-vietnam

Monsoon to bring cold weather to northern Vietnam
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 02/20/2017 11:55 GMT + 7 A monsoon in the northeast is expected to bring low temperatures and rain to the region later this week. According to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, an enhanced cold front has formed north of Vietnam and is traveling south. The mass of cool air is forecast to enter the northern part of the country on Thursday afternoon and later reach the center. Under the influence of the monsoon, light rain is anticipated in northern provinces while average temperatures are expected to drop to between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius. The mainland, including Hanoi, is forecast to experience temperatures from 13 to 15 degrees Celsius. Mountainous areas can expect brisk conditions with around eight to 11 degrees Celsius. Local residents have been advised to carry out measures to protect their crops and cattle against the cold conditions. The cold front will also cause rough seas near the Gulf of Tonkin and the northern part of the East Vietnam Sea with winds from 50 to 61 km per hour and waves from 2.5 to 3.5 meters high. According to Le Dinh Quyet, deputy head of the Southern Meteorological Station, an unseasonal rain impacted several parts of Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday afternoon and later the southern province of Tay Ninh. High temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius are expected in southern Vietnam over the next few days, Quyet said. As a northeast wind reaches the region by the weekend, average temperatures will decrease by one to three degrees Celsius, while brisk weather is still expected at night, according to the expert.

Ho Chi Minh City alleys ‘invaded’ by autos
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 02/20/2017 15:27 GMT + 7 While authorities are taking strides to reestablish order on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, its smaller alleys are under constant ‘attack’ by illegal parkers. From erecting anti-motorbike barriers on its pavements to penalizing motorcyclists who drive on sidewalks, the fight engaged by Ho Chi Minh City authorities to restore order on its streets is getting more intense than ever. But while major streets are quite often patrolled by law enforcement officers, the tens of thousands of alleys in the southern metropolis where many private residences are located are often overlooked and considered ‘parking havens’ for car owners. At lunchtime on Saturday in a small alley of Su Van Hanh Street in District 10, four cars could be seen parked on the alleyway, which measures merely six meters wide and could barely allow two cars to squeeze past each other in opposite directions. The alley leads to a condominium with a large number of apartments, and residents are often held up in congestion at the bottleneck when trying to access their home. The drivers of the cars parked in the alley to avoid being fined for illegal parking on the major streets, according to N., a local elderly man. “It was bad enough that the alleyway is narrow, but now they have started jamming cars into the alley as well,” N. said. “Where are pedestrians supposed to walk?” Down another alley on Nguyen Trai Street, District 1, six cars were parked in a long line along the alleyway. According to H., a local resident, the cars had occupied the alley regularly for the past four months, and sometimes the line would become so long that it would continue to the major road. Irritated by the cars blocking the entire entrance to their houses, some residents had aired complaints to local authorities but the situation has not been much improved since. As Nguyen Trai Street is packed with restaurants, coffee shops and fashion stores, its alleys are often utilized by customers as their parking space. According to Dinh Gia Huynh, chairman of Phu Nhuan District’ Ward 7, his administration has organized many campaigns to penalize drivers who park their cars illegally in alleys, but the authorities often find themselves helpless given the overwhelming number of violations. The situation is made worse by the lack of parking lots to meet the huge demand, Huynh said. Meanwhile, Doan Ngoc Hai, deputy chairman of District 1, said the district would be taking on illegal alley parkers after it has successfully cracked down on sidewalk-driving. “If we get tough on motorcyclists without doing the same to car drivers it will neither be effective in restoring order on the streets nor be fair for the citizens,” Hai explained. According to Ho Chi Minh City-based lawyer Pham Van Thanh, those who park vehicles in undesignated areas may face fines of VND100,000-800,000 (US$4-36). If their illegal parking leads to traffic congestion, they may be fined a maximum of VND1.2 million ($54), Thanh said.
