7 Indonesian sex workers rescued in Kota Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: Police rescued seven Indonesian women forced into prostitution by a syndicate and arrested two syndicate members following a raid in an apartment at the Inanam township near here.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Jauteh Dikun said the women, aged between 20 and 41, were promised jobs in restaurants but were instead locked up in the apartment after arriving here.

He said the women were only allowed out of the apartment, located about half an hour’s drive from the city, if there was a demand for their services.

“The women were locked in the apartment from the outside so that they could not escape,” he told reporters yesterday.

Two individuals, believed to be “agents” of the vice business — a 42-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman from Keningau district — were arrested in the 2.30pm raid on Dec 31 to facilitate investigations, he added.

“We are still hunting for several other members of this syndicate,” he said, adding that the case was being investigated under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act 2007.

Meanwhile, the women are now in shelter homes pending investigation.
