Singapore workers not loving their jobs: survey

Almost half (46 per cent) of employees in Singapore do not think they have the perfect job, a survey byglobal recruitment and human resources agency Randstad reported.

Singapore ranks second-last in Asia-Pacific when it came to employees loving their current jobs, the survey results showed. Japan is last.

India ranks first in terms of job satisfaction, with 80 per cent of its employees happy with their existing jobs, and Malaysia second.

The workers were asked if they agreed or disagreed that they have the perfect job, and their responses measured their job satisfaction.

In a list provided by Randstad, the countries rank as follows:

1. India (80 per cent)
2. Malaysia (69 per cent)
3. Hong Kong (66 per cent)
4. China (54 per cent)
5. New Zealand (49 per cent)
6. Australia (48 per cent)
7. Singapore (46 per cent)
8. Japan (44 per cent)

The study was done between 13 and 30 January 2014 through an online questionnaire. Those who responded were aged 18 to 65, working in a paid job for a minimum of 24 hours a week and are not self-employed. Part of the results was released in a media statement on 17 June.

Of the 5,670 employees in Singapore who took part in the survey, three-quarters view their job only as a way to make a living and nothing more.

The majority of Singapore employees would not hesitate to change their jobs, with 80 per cent willing to do so if they could earn more money; 78 per cent said they would do it if they could improve career opportunities; and 71 per cent would do so to find a job better suited for their educational backgrounds.

Michael Smith, the country director of Randstad Singapore, attributed today’s rising cost of living as the reason for why many of Singapore workers view their jobs solely as a way to provide for their daily needs.

“However, it is important that they look beyond remuneration and also consider job satisfaction, career progression opportunities, and a pleasant working atmosphere when making decisions about their future employment,” Smith said.

He also noted the importance of job satisfaction in determining employee efficiency and productivity.
