We can never be too careful in a foreign land. For those who were not careful and had been extorted in the cafe, many brothers have posted the mode of operations in this thread. The episode happens very often in Nanjing East Road walking mall.

If you allow, I would just repeat what I have learnt from others. What I am going to describe happens more on foreigner who is alone there. Two SYTs (Bro prcsytlover, be careful) will approach the guy, pretending to ask for direction. More likely than not, the guy will say he does not have any knowledge as he is not a local. The two girls will say that they are from an out of shanghai city, and are very thirsty and tired. They would ask the guy whether he could buy them drinks and/or snacks. If the guy says yes, the two girls will say that they know a place where the drinks and snacks are cheap (If you are careful, this will raise some suspicion, as if they were asking for direction, how could they know the cheap eating/drinking joint). If the guy follows them, he would end up at a "Black Shop" where he would be extorted after entering the joint. He would be paying exorbitant price for the simple drinks and snacks that the girls order. The paying of bill is under the watchful eyes of some thugs looking guys.

The shop that I have mentioned is at the corner of a row of shop houses, second floor. The notable feature is that the ground floor of the cafe is a big shop selling tit-bits. The staircase is inside the shop.

We are all visitors. We have to learn to cut loss and move on. More important, to learn the lesson of why we are not able to walk away from it all when they tried to make the initial contact.

I have my fair share of such tout / scam. Each time I just walk away quickly and not responding to them. If they need money, just gave them some if they looked bad enough. No more involvement.

If we are caught by those black shop, perhaps, it is better to negotiate for a lower amount, ask for receipt and report to police. Call your credit card company immediately after you are out of their sight to alert them of the transaction. Pls read the following self explanatory postings.

Bro TLSsession; I couldn't agree with you more. Why fight fire with fire? Is it really neccessary? When we visit a foreign land whether for business or pleasure, our first priority is safely there and safely back. Otherwise, why does we wish traveller 一路顺风 &　一路平安?

As the saying goes: Prevention is better than cure. Best is to avoid touts in notorious places of the place we are visiting. Foreign like Amsterdam, Paris, London and even our our Sillypore, has it's fair share of "Black Shop" to haunt tourist for life.

The best solution is to be extra careful. Anyway, I doubt you would do it if you are in the situation of having been extorted.

Your suggestion may lead to more trouble and could be more costly. Moreover, the price to pay each thug that you have quoted might not be enough as suggested by you.

Bro, don't ever do something like that. Safety is paramount so pay up using your credit card. Get out, get a police report. Call your card issuing banks immediately, contact the acquiring bank (look at the logo/company name that processed the transaction). This way, you and your money will stay intact. And the thugs wont get a single cent out of it

yup guys, would agree to solve issues with a clear headed mind instead of creating more tension. But if you stay long in Shanghai you should realize no point quarelling with them, they have more saliva spare tanks compare to all of us combine.

I am just quite an impatient person, so if I have I am ever being bullied as a foreigner in China and cannot be resolved, I would prefer to use local method to solve it. You can easily get 10 pax to sit at a restaurant to deter them from making any business. Even if the police are being called in, if you have a valid reason, no one can stop you or even bring you to police station for it.

The credit card thingy is called Chargeback. Truth is, sometimes even banking employees working in consumer credit division aren't aware. And you'll be shock to know how long the chargeback duration/window is

Bros in SH who like to chiong KTV can try this 宝佳丽商务会所...the concept is 狐狸场.. (meaning can have more than just chit chat, drinks and play dices..) the ambience is as good as LV or even better than LV.. First night got a super big room due to entertainment with guests, 2nd and 3rd time there got mid to small rooms with Shanghai friends.

MMs alot 300over if I rem correctly... I got 1 from Jiangsu 21yo SYT with 36C.. if I rem correctly and pre booking is advised on fris and sats.. If want to have more selection of MMs try go on/before Thurs.

Booking back to hotel for LT or ST please negotiate with the gal directly and discreetly.

Charges on the mid range for drinks quite ok and MMs are 500 to 600rmb depending on the uniform they wear.KJ 300rmb tips, Papasan 600rmb tips.

If got connection or regular, normally they will give discount.
