As a National University of Singapore (NUS) alumnus, I regret that freshmen can no longer feel safe at all times during orientation (“NUS suspends all student-organised events for freshmen”; July 30).

This poses a concern to parents with children aspiring to further their studies at NUS. I am not surprised, however, that its orientation games have become increasingly sexualised.

Going by the degrading acts imposed on freshmen, their seniors’ knowledge of sex comes with low morality. Not valuing one’s body results in not valuing the feelings of others.

And so freshmen have been exposed to and corrupted by such traditions followed mindlessly over the years. Mutual respect and upholding the dignity of others should not be things that are learnt only at university.

But why blame older cohorts when each of us has a bright mind to come up with creative orientation ideas? Why not take responsibility for one’s lust that causes innocent parties to be traumatised?

Students should know their limits and rights, so that they will not bully others nor be bullied.

Could a homemade rocket reach Singapore from Batam?

SINGAPORE — The arrest of six men in Batam suspected of planning to launch a rocket at Marina Bay has raised questions about what kind of rocket would be capable of achieving this aim.

To travel the roughly 25km from Batam to Marina Bay, any rocket would have to be more advanced than the homemade Qassam rockets Palestinian militants have in the past fired into Israel from inside the Gaza Strip.

The Qassam-3 rocket, made by Palestinian militant groups in underground rocket factories, measure about 2m tall and can carry a 15kg warhead. These rockets have a range of just 12km — not far enough to reach Singapore from Batam. The rockets also have no guidance system and are therefore difficult to fire accurately over long distances.

Singapore authorities issue advisories after Pokemon Go launch

SINGAPORE: Aspiring Pokemon "trainers" have been spotted all around Singapore after popular mobile game Pokemon Go launched in the city-state - as well as 14 other countries and regions - on Saturday (Aug 6).


The game has sent legions of players in a frenzy globally, with some venturing into dark alleys and unfamiliar neighbourhoods in search of the imaginary creatures. It has reportedly played a role in robberies and injuries in countries like the United States.

Authorities in Singapore have issued advisories following the game's launch, urging players to stay safe and keep out of restricted areas.

In a Facebook post, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) urged members of the public to always place their personal safety above catching Pokemon.

"The Pokémon GO craze has seen reports of accidents, injuries and even crimes in countries where it has already been launched. The Police would like to advise Pokémon GO players to enjoy the game safely," SPF said.

Unlicensed massage establishment in Serangoon Gardens busted for vice activities

SINGAPORE — Eight women were arrested following a raid at an unlicensed massage establishment at Maju Avenue in Serangoon Gardens on Thursday (Aug 4).

The police had received information on vice-related activities.

Preliminary investigations found that the women were believed to have advertised sexual services online and carried out vice-related activities in the premise.

The women, aged between 22 and 52, were arrested for offences under the Women’s Charter.

Investigations will be carried out against the premise owner.

The premise owner could be jailed up to five years, and/or fined up to S$10,000 for being the tenant, lessee or occupier or person in charge of a brothel and the offence of keeping, managing or assisting in the management of a brothel.
