Alleged Vietnamese sex workers nabbed by Indonesian gov’t
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 01/16/2017 11:21 GMT + 7 ndonesian authorities have arrested 32 foreigners, mostly from Vietnam, who were allegedly working as prostitutes in multiple entertainment venues across Jakarta. The arrests were made following investigations by Indonesia’s Immigration Office under their Law and Human Rights Ministry, which said on Friday that the foreigners had violated immigration procedures, The Jakarta Post reported on Sunday. A total of 32 suspected female sex workers, mostly from Vietnam, were arrested during a string of raids on Thursday at three entertainment centers in West Jakarta, North Jakarta and Bogor in West Java, the paper said, citing Yurod Saleh, head of the Immigration Office’s foreign nationals watchdog. Twenty-seven passports issued by Vietnam, Kazakhstan, China, Uzbekistan, Morocco and Russia were confiscated during the raids, along with five million Indonesian rupiahs (US$375) in cash, cellphones, contraceptives and karaoke hostess uniforms. The arrested women had allegedly overstayed their tourist visas and other visas on arrival, and failed to present their passports upon request from Indonesian investigators, the newspaper reported, again citing Saleh. The arrests are the second operation carried out in three weeks, with a total of 137 alleged sex workers taken into custody by Indonesian authorities so far. Investigators are looking into possible human trafficking networks responsible for sending the alleged sex workers to Indonesia. On Friday, nearly 50 Vietnamese women were among dozens arrested in a series of raids by Malaysian authorities at four entertainment venues in the southern state of Johor.

Vietnam’s Viettel gets license to operate in Myanmar
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 01/16/2017 10:08 GMT + 7 Vietnam’s military-run mobile network operator Viettel has been awarded a license to operate in Myanmar via a joint venture with two local telecom firms, less than six months after it was selected as the preferred foreign partner in the three-party consortium. Viettel Global, the outbound investment arm of the Vietnamese company, holds a 49 percent stake in the joint venture, named Myanmar National Tele & Communications, while local stakeholders Star High Public Company Limited and Myanmar National Telecom Holding P/L own 28 percent and 23 percent, respectively. The license is valid for 15 years, according to the Ministry for Transport and Communications. Viettel inked the deal to form the US$2 billion consortium with the two local partners in September last year, making Vietnam Myanmar’s seventh-largest foreign investor. Myanmar National Tele & Communications becomes the fourth and final licensed telecom company in Myanmar, now competing against existing operators Telenor Myanmar, Ooredoo Myanmar and a joint venture between Myanmar Post, Myanmar Telecom and Japan's KDDI, according to Reuters. In April, Viettel said it would invest $1.5 billion in Myanmar's telecommunications industry. The company is now present in countries across Asia, Africa and the Americas.

Vietnam world’s second-largest sport shoe exporter
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 01/16/2017 16:15 GMT + 7 Vietnam is frequently listed among the world’s top 20 footwear producers, with the Southeast Asian country now positioned among the top ten leading global footwear exporters, an industry association has said. Vietnam is now officially the world’s second largest footwear exporter by volume, just behind China, the Vietnam Leather Footwear and Handbag Association (LEFASO) said, citing recent statistics from the World Footwear Association. The country supplies more than one billion footwear products of all kinds per year, accounting for 7.3 percent of the global market share. Vietnam is also the world’s second-largest exporter of sport shoes, and the No.3 global exporter of leather footwear. As for other categories, Vietnam ranks seventh on the world tally. “Vietnam is selling all of these products at prices 1.35 to 2.8 times higher than China on average,” LEFASO deputy chairman Diep Thanh Kiet said. Kiet said the U.S. remains the world’s largest footwear buyer, importing some 2.48 billion pairs per year, while China consumes more shoes than any country on earth at 23 billion pairs a year, or an average of 2.5 pairs per person.

Ho Chi Minh City cracks down on pre-Tet congestion at major airport
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 01/16/2017 15:31 GMT + 7 Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Dinh La Thang has laid out several measures to keep the city’s major airport and nearby streets from becoming over-congested ahead of the Lunar New Year. The city's Party chief convened a working session at Tan Son Nhat International Airport on Sunday, addressing traffic jams and overcrowding at the facility prior to the coming Tet holiday, which falls on January 28. The airport welcomed over 32 million passengers in 2016, Secretary Thang stated, adding that the number could reach 40 million in 2017. Meanwhile, the airport’s design capacity is only 25 million people per annum, requiring prompt solutions to alleviate the immense pressure during this peak flying time of the year. Outdoor check-in procedure The high-ranking official suggested that passengers be able to complete their check-in procedures outside of the airport. Cabs should not be allowed to enter the airport, he continued, adding that a shuttle bus would carry passengers from the outdoor check-in area to their terminals inside the facility. Family members of flyers should also be well managed to prevent overcrowding, the secretary said. “If every passenger is accompanied by some 10 relatives and friends, no airport can handle such enormous pressure,” he remarked. Reporting to the city’s leader, Dang Tuan Tu, director of Tan Son Nhat, confirmed that the number of delayed flights had been significantly reduced thanks to the new application of technology. Putting a five-story parking lot into operation has also minimized gridlock at the airport’s premises, Tu continued. Despite this, Thang reflected on his own flight to the south-central city of Cam Ranh last week, for which he had to wait for 11 other planes before taking off. He said that flight control at Tan Son Nhat remained limited, recommending that foreign experts be hired and consulted for their experience. Improving the airport is not just the task of the municipal transport department but of all people in the city, Thang concluded, saying that boosting the aerodrome would help spur local development. 24/7 monitoring According to Tran Quang Lam, deputy director of the city’s Department of Transport, two working groups have been assigned with around-the-clock monitoring of traffic at the airport and Cat Lai Port. Additional units will also be ready to deal with traffic jams at 27 other hotspots throughout the metropolis, Lam added. The number of daily flights at Tan Son Nhat has increased by 50 compared to average days and is expected to continue rising as the Lunar New Year approaches. The transport official urged regular commuters to avoid traveling on Truong Son Street, which leads to the airport, especially during these days to lower the risk of congestion. Trucks will also be banned from the road at certain hours to curb the problem, Lam said. More bus routes to airport The transport department will continue to provide more bus routes to take passengers into and out of Tan Son Nhat, while the department is also considering opening a bus and taxi stop at the nearby Gia Dinh Park. An exclusive bus lane on the Nam Ky Khoi Nghia- Nguyen Van Troi-Truong Son-Tan Son Nhat route is also a potential solution. According to Major Nguyen Hoang Minh, vice-captain of the traffic police unit at the airport, the traffic situation in the area has been quite stable thanks to the around-the-clock control of officers. Maj. Minh called on citizens to assist the effort by complying to traffic rules and avoiding confrontation after any accident, which can quickly block traffic flow.

Ho Chi Minh City to fix ‘confusing’ downtown decorations
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 01/16/2017 17:01 GMT + 7 The Lunar New Year decorations on a number of streets in downtown Ho Chi Minh City will be fixed after causing confusion among locals with their dazzling technicolor and abstraction. For the past few weeks, a series of bright-colored light decorations have been put up on multiple streets in District 1 to celebrate the upcoming Tet, or Lunar New Year, which falls on January 28. On Pham Ngoc Thach Street that runs from the back of the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon, the circle-shaped LED lights in various colors are supposed to stand for sound waves, demonstrating the youthfulness and dynamism of the city. However, locals say they look closer to decorative flowers painted on the walls of kindergartens, as the ‘sound waves’ are too cramped and colorful, making them difficult to be made out from a distance. One of the decorative arcs on Pham Ngoc Thach Street even caught fire on Sunday evening, supposedly due to a short circuit. continue reading here http://tuoitrenews.vn/society/39058/...wn-decorations
