AirAsia drops Chiang Mai-Singapore route.

Published: 17/03/2012 at 04:12 AM
Newspaper section: Business 0Share

Thai AirAsia (TAA) is dropping its Chiang Mai-Singapore route and replacing it with a Chiang Mai-Macau service.

The termination will improve operating cost efficiencies while allowing the low-cost carrier to initiate a new international route from Chiang Mai and develop better connections between its northern hub and southern China.

The Singapore service will end on May 21, with the Macau flights beginning the next day.

TAA will accept bookings for the new service starting later this month.

It is planning daily flights to the southern Chinese territory.

TAA has the most routes and the highest number of flights from Chiang Mai airport.

The LCC began developing its business there in January 2011 and considers the city its third hub. The other hubs are Suvarnabhumi and Phuket airports.

TAA is the Thai unit of Asia's largest low-cost carrier, Malaysia's AirAsia Bhd.

TAA currently offers connections from Chiang Mai to five destinations.

Service from Chiang Mai to Bangkok is offered eight times a day, to Phuket twice daily, to Ubon Ratchathani thrice daily and to Hat Yai and Singapore daily.

TAA flies 24 Airbus A320s.

Chief executive Tassapon Bijleveld said passengers holding Chiang Mai-Singapore tickets for flights after May 21 will be sent an email and given the option of a full refund or credit towards other TAA flights.

The credit will be valid for 90 days after the date of issue.

Silkair is ex and I would rather fly via Bkk.

Now at least you can find excuse to do both way stopover in Bkk.

The stopover is long. Maybe better to stay the night in BKK before connecting to Chiangmai. But I would rather fly direct to Chiangmai by silkair. The last time I was over my client wanted to book my flight via Thai Air. That would have required a long stopover. But I told him that I SilkAir flies direct and therefore there was no need to stopover.

Thumbs down Re: Infos on Chiang Mai

I did a comparison two years ago.

Flying with Silkair can be cheap, provided you purchase your ticket at least 3 month in advance at hot deal promo, however the dates can be sucks, compare with Thai airways, which flys everyday, but the price is quite steep. 538sgd is the most cheapest even you purchase 3 months in advance or 2 weeks before you flying.

Otherwise flying over to bkk and take their domestic can be a real pain in ass, unless you plan properly the timing. Twice, I almost missed my flight to cnx. No CIQ, fly in Cathay Pacific, and Bangkok Airways. Did about 500 meter run and lucky the PRC were kind enough to allow me to stamp my passport first, otherwise there goes my domestic to CNX. Price is cheaper by at least 100 plus bucks, if you were to get promo on full service flight to BKK, as for domestic flight to CNX sometime is about 1800baht to 3000baht, depending on festival. I did a checked last year, for Bangkok airways, fully booked, even the price were at 2.5k baht. Staying at Bangkok for a night or two can be fun too, but I didn't had the chance to try.

Singapore-Chiang Mai Route

In the future I can fly to Chiang Mai from Macau if there's a need or able to get super cheap offers.

On a serious note whichever budget airline operates the Singapore-Chiang Mai route is doomed to fail.

A few years ago Tiger Airways dropped the Singapore-Chiang Mai route.
After that AirAsia operates this route and now also share the same fate.

Chiang Mai is a good place to do sighteeing and just relax to the slower pace of life.
Not good for cheonging.

Re: Infos on Chiang Mai

Nonteerak, Huanggua -both of you are right on transiting Bkk vs Silkair. I've been there and done it. Shortest onward TG total flight time via Bkk is 4.5-5hrs (if you take 1st early morning departure ex Sin). Others stretch 6-10hrs.

Doing Nonteerak's combo risk the airport end to end run, to domestic terminal with switch of CX airline to domestic carrier Bkk Airways or TG. Trade off for TG's higher ticket cost circa 500+ is you are assured of connection (if you late from 1st sector).

BD, you'll be surprised Silkair (off periods) can be had for near comparable with AAsia. Downside is non-daily flights. TC, it's about load factor. On weekend runs, AAsia was doing ok (price up too). Well, we had it for 1 year from last Feb (I think)

Re: Infos on Chiang Mai

Well, after 21st May we all have no choice travel direct with Silkair which I'm sure will jack up their fares and or travel via Bkk to save times or costs.

There might be a solution if one look at both Budget airlines from Sin (TA,JS & AA) via Bkk (Nok,Orient & AA) to Cnx instead of TG or BA.

When I look at Silkair recent promotion I notice Chiangmai was not included.

Re: Infos on Chiang Mai

I yet to try Nok Air, but my friend told me that she had very bad experience with Nok Air. Lost her luggage in the counter that checked in for luggage, but only got 2k baht as compensation.

My personal opinion, I would get promo deals for full service flight, bkk-sin or sin-bkk (unfortunately, they doesn't have much promo on full service to bkk-sin, only sin-bkk) on side note; I will never take CX from Bangkok to Singapore, or from Singapore to Bangkok anymore, budget flight price nowadays is getting more and more ridiculous, I believe one only need to top up about 40 sgd in order to get a comfort sit with full service flight, compare to budget airlines, but if plan earlier, might gets a good deal on budget air, but then again, maybe about 4 to 5 months ahead.

Never check-in your luggage if you've important documents or precious articles.
The compensation is meaningless if the lost items are irreplaceable.

This route might not be that cheaper either.

AirAsia used to be very cheap when it just started its business.
Not any more.
Right now Jetstar Airways at any time offers better value than AirAsia or Tiger Airways.

The bottomline is International flights to Chiang Mai is not as lucrative as flights to Bangkok or Phuket.
I would do the same to charge higher fares if I'm running this route as there're only 1 competitor flying from Singapore to Chiang Mai.

I'll consider going to Chiang Mai only if there're super cheap offers.
Those were the days (many years ago) when you can get S$90.96 (tax incl) for a SIN/CNX return trip on Tiger Airways when there're offers!

First stop will always be Bangkok if I can manage to take a vacation (long overdue)!
Chiang Mai is undoubtedly at the bottom of my priority list.
