Scantily-clad performers could be banned 6 months

The Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism has proposed to the government a new decree under which scantily-clad stage entertainers could be banned from performance for a period of between three and six months.


According to the proposed decree, besides receiving monetary fines, artists who violate in performing costumes will not be allowed to perform overseas as well.

Last week, there was a public outcry over the penalty against local pop singer Thu Minh, who wore revealing clothes criticized by the public as being offensive at a music show titled “Ngan Sao Hoi Tu” (The Convergence of a Thousand Stars) in HCMC on April 20.

The fine was considered just a light slap on the wrist that serves as a poor deterrent compared with the fame the singer attracted after the scandal.

Pham Xuan Phuc, deputy chief inspector of the ministry, said that the penalty should include both fines and bans, like in football.

“It’s not right to issue fines to singers only, the show’s organizer is the one who should be fined,” Le Ngoc Cuong, former director of the Performing Arts Department added.

Also, he mentioned that competent authorities must be stricter in censorship. “Authorities need to stop winking at violating shows. It’s unacceptable if you receive money from show organizers then allow decency-flouting incidents to take place.”

Vo Trong Nam, director of the HCMC Culture, Sport and Tourism Department informed that the department handled 11 cases of decency violation within the first 5 months of this year, three cases more than the total number recorded last year.

Violators be made to do community service?

Though violating models including Ha Anh, Bebe Pham, Ngoc Quyen and singers Minh Hang and Thu Minh were invited to the conference on May 18 that focused on violations in dressing etiquette, they were not present.

Singer Thanh Thuy from the Military Zone 7 art troupe said it’s time to have detailed regulations on performing costumes.

“Artists who regularly wear ao dai (Vietnam’s traditional long gown) cannot be hotter than those who wear just a little or nothing,” she complained.

In addition, musician The Hien suggested a stricter penalty for decency flouters. “Artists who like revealing their bodies must do community service!” he opined.

Shooting nude photos and posting them on Facebook or other social networking sites is becoming common among teenagers in Vietnam, but the ‘models’ are not aware that they have been victimized by their nudity.

On a recent weekend day, we followed Đ.D., a photographer who agreed to shoot a series of nude photos for a teen girl.

He said shooting nude photos takes a lot of effort because the young customers often require ‘strange’ positions and a professional crew including two photographers and one styler.

Standing at 165cm tall, H.H. has the ideal body statistics, and expressed her confidence as she came out of a bathroom in the buff. H is currently studying at a university in Ho Chi Minh City.

Two hours later, H had a collection of 100 nude photos, featuring the sexy curves in her body.

“This is my first time shooting nude. I saw many friends of mine doing so. They told me that if I have a good body, I should be proud of it and show off. So I tried to keep up with them,” H said.

Diep H., 18, a first-year student, is so proud of her expressive face and good acting in front of a camera, despite the fact that she doesn’t have the most attractive appearance. She has been dubbed the “Beauty queen of nude photos” by Facebook users due to her voluptuous curves.

Sexually abused

While some nude models are proud of what they’ve done, others have complained that they have been sexually abused by photographers.

Mai Linh, 18, a resident of Vo Van Kiet Street, District 8, recalled: “Two months ago, a photographer who I got to know through a social networking site tried to convince me to shoot nude. I agreed to out of my curiosity. But when I took off clothes, the photographer touched my breast, claiming that he was helping me pose for photos.”

Ha G., 22, hailing from Tan Phu District, felt regret that her nude photos were leaked as they fell into the wrong hands four years ago.

“When I was 18, I had a photographer shoot my nude photos through the recommendation of a friend without my boyfriend’s knowledge. When I was involved in an argument with the friend, she intentionally posted my photos on the internet. My boyfriend saw them and decided to end our relationship,” G. said in sad voice.

Recently, a clip portraying a behind-the-scenes look at a nude photo shoot posted on Youtube has attracted criticism. Although the online community has strongly condemned whoever posted it, the main character in the clip has also received heavy criticism from public opinion.
