Just saw a column from Yahoo! News that the police are going to implement more stringent rules for the Spas and Massage centres. Obviously they want to sweep our playgrounds clean.. Read on..


SINGAPORE : More masseuses are now taking up professional massage courses following tougher licensing requirements set by the police.

According to the Spa Institute, more than 150 people have signed up for its courses since June.

Another training institute, The Spa and Wellness Academy, said the number has increased 14—fold in recent months.

The Police Licensing Division has made it a requirement that by 2012, all massage parlours and spa establishments must hire only masseuses with professional qualifications if they want their licences renewed.

By June this year, 20 per cent of them must be professional trained.

But some spa and massage operators said they are finding it difficult to meet the new licensing requirements.

Training courses do not come cheap as it costs S$2,000 to S$8,000 just to train one therapist.

To help defray their costs, spa and massage operators can get a subsidy in course fees of up to 90 per cent from the Skills Development Fund.

The subsidy, which is available to Singaporeans, comes under the Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) framework of the Workforce Development Agency.

Beside govt training ctr, some sch already providing trainig n exam.
even saw 1 institute in bugis have such courses.

not all massg shop need to comply, only those with massag establish act 173A licence nbeed.

the massage schools need guinea pigs or not? i don't mind lying there for them to practice.. sekali slowly slowly they also got teach their trainees do juagen or hj.. LOL

I see this as a positive note rather then a negative one. First there is a form of control, second, we should get better massage since they are "trained" & third but not least, certified HC gives us a better peace of mind as after all, what we want is a relaxing, peaceful and "enjoyable moment".

I say the certs that the mei meis get will only be for show. I am sure many of them will not give up the chance to make easy money from other means.

After they spend money on the certs, they will try 2 find other means to recoup it back asap. Wonder what the rules will achieve in the end?
