Eastern Thailand
EASTERN THAILAND
Attracting thousands and thousands of visitors, both Thai and foreign, the East Coast is today one of the most popular destinations. Holiday-makers flock to the region, particularly over weekends and long holidays, which offers an immense variety of marine and other natural attractions: The choice of facilities and conveniently close to Bangkok by road, it is virtually a year-round destination. Stretching over 400 kilometres of coast-line, from Chon Buri and Pattaya to Rayong, Chantaburi on to Trat, are fine beaches, coves and bays with countless off-shore islands. Visitors can opt for a relaxing stay along the beach, or choose the more vibrant atmosphere of a modern coastal town. The more actively-inclined can go for the many tourism-related activities. Inland are verdant forestlands with lovely cascades and waterfalls. The East Coast is also famous for its abundance of culinary choices, from fresh seafood to spicy local dishes. In addition, it offers a vast range of seafood products to take home. Tropical fruits grown here are among the tastiest in the country. The region is believed to have been settled by various people since pre-historic times. It has served as a center for commercial and cultural exchange through its many important seaports. The region has played a major role in this respect throughout the ages, from the ancient Dvaravati Era on to the times of the Khmer, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya to the present. Archaeologically, evidence of pre-historic civilization has been unearthed for the first time in Chon Buri's Phanat Nikhom and Bo Thong districts. Items discovered include stone tools, pottery and human skeletons, all more than 2,000 years old. Around the 11th-16th centuries (Buddhist Era), Dvaravati-period communities were established in the region, which bore strong Indian religious and artistic influences. Found mainly in Chon Buri and Chanthaburi, these communities are believed to have close association with the Dvaravati settlements in the central region. Several Khmer ancient monuments of the same period have also been discovered in Chanthaburi and Trat, giving rise to the conjecture that the area was once a part of the ancient Khmer Empire. During the times when Ayutthaya was a trading centre in Southeast Asia, a number of coastal ports were established to export exotic items such as antlers, animal hides, fragrant woods and spices. Most of these products came from the eastern jungles. In 1767 when Ayutthaya was captured by the Burmese, the soon-to-be King Taksin with his followers fought through enemy line to the East Coast marching through Chon Buri, Pattaya and Rayong. He finally settled in Chanthaburi and used it to mobilize his forces which eventually won over the Burmese and restored the country's independence. During the period when colonisation was ripe (late 18th Century), the French forcibly occupied both Chanthaburi and Trat. Consequently, Thailand was compelled to sacrifice certain territory in order to regain these areas and to retain sovereignty over the rest of the country. GETTING THERE : By Road - Highway No. 3 extends throughout the region, from Bangkok to all the major coastal provinces such as Chon Buri, Pattaya, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat, a distance of some 400 kilometres. There are also feeder roads connecting the various Changwat (province) short-cutting the route. Highway No. 34 links Bangkok with Chon Buri; the Motorway helps shorten the distance Bangkok-Chonburi-Pattaya; Pattaya and Rayong is linked by Highway No. 36; and Highway No. 344 leads from Ban Bung To Klaeng. Travelling by buses is convenient. From the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekamai) in Bangkok there are services to every eastern province. Buses serving Pattaya are also available from the New Ma Chit Bus Terminal. Inter-provincial services are plentiful. By Rail - The eastern train route starts from Bangkok making stops at Chachoengsao, Chon Buri and Pattaya terminating at Phlu Ta Luang station (Sattahip). The daily service leaves Hualamphong Railway Station in Bangkok once a day. By Air - Bangkok Airways operates flights between U-taphao (about 30 kms. south of Pattaya) and Samui Island in the South. By Sea - There are passenger ferry services from the mainland to different major off-shore island destinations, e.g., from Ban Phe landing in Rayong to Ko Samet and from Trat's Laem Ngop to Ko Chang. Normally operating daily, it is advisable to ascertain if they are run during the Monsoon season May-June. |

History of Pattaya
History of Pattaya
Pattaya's name originated from the march of Phraya Tak (later King Taksin) and his followers from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi just before the fall of the former capital to the Burmese invaders in 1767. When Phraya Tak's army arrived at the vicinity of what is today's Pattaya, he encountered the troops of Nai Klom who tried to intercept him. But when the two leaders met face to face, Nai Klom was awed by Phraya Tak's dignified manner and his army's strict discipline. And he surrendered without a fight. The place the two armies confronted each other, was later called Thap Phraya, which means the Army of the Phraya. This was changed to Phatthaya, which happens to mean the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast at the beginning of the rainy season. Today the spelling of the name has been simplified to Pattaya. For the past centuries, Pattaya was a small fishing village almost cut off from the outside world. But a big change occurred on 29 April 1961 when the first group of about 100 American servicemen who would join the Vietnam War arrived in Pattaya for relaxation. Soon, the sleepy Pattaya became Thailand's premier and most successful beach resort which annually attracts hundreds of thousands of pleasure-seeking visitors. Fishermen's huts along the beach were replaced by a full range of accommodations from super deluxe hotels to bungalows and mini-pocket guesthouses. Fishing vessels were adapted to become tourist boats. And the quiet powdery golden beaches are frequented by swimmers and sunbathers from various parts of the world. Places of nighttime entertainment have also sprung up and are popular among international tourists. |

Re: Pattaya, Thailand
Here are more details on the stabbing of the American from Hawaii.
Boonlua Chatree An American tourist was beaten up and stabbed to death on Beach Road in the early hours of February 11 by a prostitute and her pimp, apparently after declining the woman’s services. A songtaew driver told Pattaya police that a foreign man had been stabbed at the entrance to Soi 7, only 50 meters away from the police station, and that he had taken the injured visitor to Pattaya Memorial Hospital. On arrival at the scene of the stabbing officers found a pool of blood at the entrance to Soi 7. A motorcycle taxi driver and tourists who had been drinking in a nearby bar said they had seen a Thai male and female on a pink unlicensed Yamaha Mio motorcycle. They were talking with the foreign man who subsequently ran across the road to the entrance of Soi 7 and that the Thai man ran after him kicking and punching him, and knocking him to the ground. The woman then walked over and stabbed him before the pair made their getaway. Officers at the hospital found Tony Lindsey of Honolulu undergoing emergency treatment to injuries suffered to the lower abdomen, the right rib cage and right wrist. Doctors tried hard to save him, but due to the massive loss of blood and the severity of the injuries he died. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the woman is a prostitute who plies her trade along Beach Road and that her pimp is always close by. Police believe that the American tourist was propositioned by the woman, but refused and may have insulted her in the process. This resulted in the pimp beating him up before the woman stabbed him. Police are looking for the pair. |

Wednesday 1st March 2006 English tourist injured after he attempts to stop an argument in Soi 8. Police were called to the front of the Easteny Inn Hotel in Soi 8 after a late night disturbance involving three Thai men and an English Tourist. The case begins with a verbal altercation between a bar girl and two Thai men, later identified as Khun Sanan aged 20 and Khun Sompong aged 24. Khun Sanan has been admiring the girl who works at one of the bars inside the Soi for some time, however on a number of occasions, she has refused his advances and this night was no different. Proposed new shopping centre in Pattaya
Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 20 March 2006 :-
Proposed new shopping centre in Pattaya 'Mr Hippy' plans a Las Vegas-style shopping centre with everything to offer in North Pattaya Veteran Thai boxing promoter Banchong Busarakamwong, known to many as "Mr Hippy", plans to spend over 500 million baht building a Las Vegas-style shopping arcade in North Pattaya. The move comes after the successful launch of a huge sports club and resort in the popular tourist town. Mr Banchong, the chairman and founder of Fairtex Sportclub & Resort Co, said the group had rented an eight-rai plot in North Pattaya for the project, next to its Fairtex Muay Thai sports club, which opened last month. Half the space will be a shopping arcade and half will be a five-star condominium with room for expanding sports facilities. Building of the low-rise retail outlet is expected to begin early next year and finish within the next two years. "We will apply the atmosphere of shopping arcades in Las Vegas to our own complex to fulfil our services and make our sports club and resort more attractive," said Mr Banchong. About 20% of the anchor and service providers at Fairtex Shopping Arcade would be different from the others in Pattaya, he said. Although Mr Banchong earlier lost several hundred million baht when he went into partnership to develop Somprasong Plaza in Pattaya, he said he was still fascinated by the beachside location. "What boxing has taught us about daring and courage has eventually become a method in running our business," he said. The 250-million-baht Fairtex Sports Club and Resort, opened at the end of last month, was built on eight rai in North Pattaya, near the bus terminal. It houses restaurants and several outdoor and indoor sport facilities, including: badminton, basketball and squash courts; a fitness centre; swimming pool; boxing rings; and a rock-climbing wall; as well as a five-star hotel with 60 rooms, a 50-room dormitory building and parking for 100 cars. "Pattaya has lots of opportunities. People have high purchasing power but there are no sports clubs available. So, Fairtex was built to serve the demand of people who are looking for activities in the daytime," he said. The new sports club and resort targets A-group customers and aims for a ratio of 60% foreigners with the balance Thais. The foreign group is larger than Thais because Pattaya is home to thousands of expats from Europe, Japan, North America, Australia and Korea. The minimum membership package costs 35,000 baht, and there are 500 members already. The company aims to have 1,000 members by the end of the year, when it expects sales to reach 100 million baht. The company plans to serve 2,000 members and expects to see a return on investment within three to four years. In the long term, Mr Banchong said the company planned to open at least 10 Fairtex facilities in Thailand. Fairtex operates four Muay Thai camps in Japan and two in the United States. It plans to increase these to 20 in Japan and 10 in the US in the near future. Locally, Fairtex has one Muay Thai camp with a gym in Bang Phli and now another in Pattaya. Mr Banchong said Muay Thai was very popular around the world. People from the US, Japan, and Europe, all wanted to practise Thai boxing, not only to train or coach, but to protect themselves. There are more than 10 companies in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia that want to go into joint ventures with the firm or franchise camps in their countries. Mr Banchong said recognition of the Fairtex brand overseas had been very good thanks to support from Tata Young, a Thai singer who has a close relationship with his youngest son, Prem. The company also has its own factory producing Muay Thai equipment. |

Re: Pattaya, Thailand
Quote:
My first R&R in Thailand was in Pattaya... travelled 6 hours and reached around 11pm... that was back in 1999.... whole town was filled with energy and life even though its already 11pm... was really an eye opener to see all the lights... bars, women, farangs, tourists.... partied till 4am... Suddenly out of no where, Thai women will come and hug and danced together... damn happening... was told the nite life last till morning.... Personally, I'll say Bangkok WL/FL are better looking than Pattaya ladies.... but then u still can easily hook up women in Pattaya.. maybe quality not as good as Bangkok.... Lotsa new disco places in Pattaya North now... there's Drifter (nearby Big C)... looks nice from the outside... and then somewhere further, there's this Thai restaurant/pub call BITCHY.... also this nice restaurant call Bale. Also visited couple of agogo bars in Walking Street... my favourite is still Super Baby.... quality not bad actually..... |
