SportsHub COO issues clarification notice on STTA

Three months ago on 16 Aug, TODAY published an article (‘Despite string of successes, foreign talent issue dogs Lee Bee Wah‘) about MP Lee Bee Wah stepping down from her Presidency of the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA). She was reported to have cried after announcing that she would not be contesting the STTA presidency.

TODAY highlighted:

“Ms Lee Bee Wah, who announced yesterday that she would not be standing for re-election next month, continues to be dogged by the issue of foreign talent in sports.

While the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games saw the national paddlers winning six out of seven gold medals available at Glasgow 2014, a number of Singaporean fans took to social media to complain about the number of foreign-born players in the 10-member team, which included two Singapore-born paddlers Clarence Chew and Isabelle Li.”

Ms Lee was reported to have replied: “Whatever we do, we will not be able to please everyone.”

She also said: “I would like to spend more time in my constituency and prepare for the next general election. I will still be an adviser to STTA and will help if I am needed.”

In the same news article, TODAY also quoted Mr Oon Jin Teik, SportsHub chief operating officer and former chief executive officer of the Singapore Sports Council.

He said Ms Lee brought “real glory to Singapore” with the system she built. TODAY further quoted Mr Oon saying:

“She localised the China-born paddlers to adapt to Singapore and its lifestyle, and pursued excellence in sports with integrity, passion and self-sacrifice.

She cleaned up an NSA that had been filled with problems, replacing it with professionalism, respect and hard work. Singapore table tennis will miss the services of Lee Bee Wah.”

Oon’s notice of clarification comes 3 months later

Suddenly, after 3 months of silence, Mr Oon put up a notice of clarification on TODAY yesterday (1 Nov):

Mr Oon specifically clarified that he did not “intend to refer to or in any way criticise the previous management of STTA, which had also worked very hard and successfully to promote table tennis in Singapore.”

“I am sorry if my statement has been understood as denying the professionalism, efforts and achievements of the previous management of STTA,” he added.

Certainly, this latest clarification from Mr Onn some 3 months later contrasted with what he said earlier about Ms Lee cleaning up “an NSA that had been filled with problems”.

It’s not known what “problems” Mr Oon was referring to be “filling” STTA but a cursory check on the Internet revealed that the former STTA President Choo Wee Khiang and High Performance Manager Koh Li Ping were charged in court for alleged corruptions on 8 Dec 2011.

Choo Wee Khiang and Koh Li Ping will be charged in Court on 8th December 2011.

Choo Wee Khiang will be charged for three counts of corruptly accepting gratification under Section 6(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chapter 241; and one count of criminal breach of trust as a servant, which is an offence under Section 408 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224.

Koh Li Ping will be charged for one count of engaging with Choo Wee Khiang in a conspiracy to commit criminal breach of trust as a servant, an offence under Section 408 read with Section 109 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224.

However, Choo, who was also a former PAP MP, was acquitted of criminal breach of trust of $8,400 after a trial last year. And in Apr this year, he was granted a discharge amounting to an acquittal on the three remaining corruption charges [Link].

So, perhaps Mr Oon was right to clarify that there were no problems “filling” STTA after all.
