Below is a satire write-up aimed at describing my unforgettable time in that infamous chalet:


Upon arrival at the check-in lobby of this holiday plaza, located slightly away from civilisation, in a secluded district five minutes’ drive away from a world renowned airport, one can testify to the extravagant effort the hotel's management put into contriving a grandiose "Abstinence" theme, which welcomes incoming lodgers by stripping them of their worldly possession, that includes mobile phones, electronic organisers, wallets and cash - familiar elements of a materialistic culture of an economically developed Singapore.

This ingeniously designed setting creates a unique environment that allows every guest to fully embrace the freedom in being completely unplugged from the digital online platform and rejoicing in the detachment from the inevitable stress of the working class.

To further expand on the "Abstinence" concept by discouraging comparison of personal style of dressing among the guests, thus eliminating the pressure one shall naturally feel when being faced with various fashion trends, every resident's usual clothing is replaced by three white T-shirts and three pairs of navy blue shorts, complimentary gifts that are part of the courtesy of the staycation's planners.

Without the constant clamorous distraction induced by Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and a myriad of popular social media applications that have embedded themselves into our lifestyle, you can have the luxury of time to engage in more self-enriching activities such as reading, meditating and organising your deepest thoughts in a safe, teetotal space attentively protected by the diligent full-time staff working round the clock.

Owning only a straw mat, two blankets and some basic toiletries, coupled with being away from the hustle and bustle of the corporal ladder, every guest, especially followers of Laozi's philosophy, can truly experience the quintessence of having more with less and attaining peace through eliminating wants.

As a take-home bonus, numerous drug addicts, compulsive smokers and alcoholics will eventually check out of this intoxicant-free inn totally unshackled from the bondage of their bad habits and undesirable past, acquiring a renewed mentality to start afresh.

Thank you, Singapore still has a long way to progress in the areas of creating relevant jobs, encouraging businesses and expanding skill sets of its citizens.

With a judgmental mindset, some of these leaders and authorities, regardless of political or non-political, are quick to discredit your character and products from an unfair vantage point, and failing to see that they themselves also have similar needs, wants, desires and dreams like you and me.

Their full-time positions of power have given them a false perception of themselves, artificially increasing their daily sense of self-worth.

Only when they return to their bedrooms at night, followed by 45 minutes of jerking off to Japan AV (Bukkake, gang bang series), will they clearly see their true inner cores - nothing special, nothing unusual, nothing shameful and nothing to really hide.

For that brief significant moment, a time-out from their regular supremacy, right in front of their blinking filthy laptops, they mentally concede that they are not the gods they try to project themselves to be.

You may be an ex-convict, or you may even have a family member/ relative/ friend who is an ex-convict, or you may even know someone who is an ex-convict, considering the fact that a person can be jailed in Singapore simply for farting in public train. With such a ridiculous high probability of drawing the "Go To Prison" card in Singapore, it is good to arm yourself with some knowledge of the caged-up life.

But do you know what is so scary about the local jail house? The scariest thing about prison is not sleeping on the concrete floor, drinking tap water, or being deprived of porn and pizza, but losing out to your peers because while you are on this government funded vacation behind bars, the world is busy upgrading and making money, leaving you out of the equation. When you are eventually released, you have already been kicked 10 steps backwards and missed a few dice rolls in the Monopoly board game, in contrast to your peers who have already passed "Go" and collect $200.

Who can you seek help from? Mr Benny Seto's Eighteen Chefs or that bespectacled guy from Yellow Ribbon? You scratch your head, pondering about your misty future.

Now, that is fucking scary. If you have to go through a traumatic downtime of this sort, you have no choice but to work extra hard after your impediment to maintain your competitive edge, minimising unnecessary time wastage to recover whatever lost opportunities you might have had. Be bold and take on more calculated risks to propel 2 steps for every step the slow-moving world is taking. You are already "dead", so there is nothing to lose.

Luck without taking calculated risk is equal to no luck.

Boldness + Calculation + Spontaneity + Luck = Propulsion

Tell yourself or your fellow convicted friends not to let the laws determine one's destiny!

While Singapore's prison complexes have increased in square feet over the years, the prison system is sadly failing to adopt a beneficial culture of rehabilitating its inmates. Being the first world country that Singapore always touts itself to be, it must also aspire to implement a first world prison system in the republic, where the majority of the prisoners have been jailed for their first-time, non-violence offences. These so-called fathoms of the society have every possibility of turning themselves around upon their eventual release to integrate with the working population instead of being doomed as social outcasts for life. As long as there is a will to change, these convicts can. Nobody is perfect and sometimes humans fall into the wrong side of the laws.

Helping these people change their criminal mentality must be the primary goal of every prison system because it will effectively add values to the society and reduce chances of recidivism. Instead of embracing a traditional, punitive approach, penitentiaries can do more to rehabilitate these disadvantaged rejects who have slipped in their lives, many due to adverse environmental factors.

Above that, even prior to the actual sentence, the accused is already being punished by an invisible force. Some cases get adjourned for 3 months, some get delayed over the span of 24mths.

During such period of time, people have to declare while applying for jobs.
Imagine being in a position where you are in between jobs, having resigned from 1 and starting someplace new when the entire saga happens. Obligated to inform your new employer that you have been charged in the court of law and they retract the offer. Turning back to the employer where you resigned from and they tell you that they are unable to take you back due to "branding" issues if the case were to appear in the papers.

And right now you are stuck in a position where you have to tick that box saying "have you ever been charged in the court of law" and stating it is an open case. What are the chances the employer will proceed?

Above all, it was due to a Careless act while intoxicated - with memory loss [blackedout], opening a closed shop door, walking in, turning out, nothing was damaged nor taken. And the next thing you know? You are being charged with housebreaking with a term of up to 3 years.

Was the act wrong? Yes
Did the person learn from the mistake? Yes
Is the person remorseful? Yes

But it is the period of time of being jobless, uncertain on how long the thing will drag that is painful.

Life is never fair and you have lived long enough to figure that part out. Our lucks fluctuate with greater volatility than Nasdaq or S&P combined, but amidst all the chaos, we need to be brave to face all unexpected life problems - marriage, work, social, business, health, finance.

It is important to understand the laws of the country you are residing in, regardless of how much you agree with them. Do you truly believe that all the judges and public prosecutors in the world do not have any sorts of unspoken vices up their sleeves, robes, pants and skirts? (Oh, really.)

Ex-convicts should help one another out in the areas of social networking, job opportunities, and mental support when they are eventually released, following the footsteps of Benny Seto of Eighteen Chefs who has pioneered this concept.

With that, I will write a short piece of encouragement below for those of you who need it:
